‘Assassin’s Creed’ first look – Will this finally break the video game movie curse?

Video game movies have taken a bad rap over the years. Following terrible adaptations like Super Mario Bros. and Max Payne; mediocre ones such as Prince of Persia and the recent Hitman: Agent 47, is there a chance that the future may have genuinely good video game movies on the horizon? With the talent attached to Assassin’s Creed, there just might be hope.

Yahoo Movies has just released our first look at Michael Fassbender all robed up for the upcoming video game adaptation.

Coming in hot off their recent critically-praised collaboration, Macbeth, Fassbender will be reteaming with director Justin Kurtzel and co-star Marion Cottilard to deliver a different take on the popular video game franchise.

It has been announced that the Hollywood adaptation will be taking liberties from the game’s existing story. Instead of revisiting game storylines, it will be introducing new characters, such as Fassbender’s Callum Lynch, into the same world.

In the movie, Lynch discovers that he descends from an ancient line of Assassins and that by unlocking genetic memories he can relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Just like Desmond from the Assassin’s Creed video game series, Lynch will be using these memories to prepare himself to take on the oppressive Knights Templar of the present day.

Also starring Michael Kenneth Williams (12 Years a Slave), and Ariane Labed (Before Midnight), cameras start rolling for Assassin’s Creed on Monday. Filming is set to happen in Malta, London, and Spain. The movie is set to be released Dec. 21, 2016.

“Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain.  Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.”
