Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel ‘Hansel & Gretel’ lands film adaptation

Despite the timid success of the recent Jeremy Renner-starring Hansel & Gretel film, another one is being pushed through, this time taking Neil Gaiman’s same-name graphic novel as source material. It is worth to note that Gaiman’s graphic novel breathes a much bleaker air than last year’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, which essentially translated the famed Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale directly to an uncompromising (and often ) piece of genre pulp. And to give you an idea just how different it is, here’s a page from Gaiman’s Lorenzo Mattoti-illustrated book:

Not that a reminder is at all necessary: Gaiman is the author of Coraline and The Graveyard Book, both novels catering young readers but touching things that are universally deep and profound.

For his graphic novel Gaiman re-imagines the tale as raw and unflinching as it will allow, which is just what inspires my excitement for this news.

“It reminds us of how paper thin civilization really is,” says Gaiman.  “It’s about hunger, and about families.”

Juliet Blake, who co-produced with Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg The Hundred-Foot Journey, is developing the film adaptation of which Gaiman says he is “thrilled and delighted” (per Variety).

No other names are currently attached, but it is certainly moving forward — alongside Gaiman’s other upcoming projects both on film and television.

Gaiman’s beloved series The Sandman is also eyeing an adaptation to film, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and David Goyer attached; whilst his acclaimed fantasy novel American Gods is being developed for a television series.
