Benicio del Toro might bring his intense eyes to ‘Star Wars Episode VIII’

After passing on the role of Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness, it would have looked like Benicio del Toro had already fulfilled his destiny in space villainy after he took on the role of The Collector in Guardians of the Galaxy. Now, it seems that he’s going two for two though as The Wrap reports that he is being offered the (probably main) villain role in Star Wars Episode VIII.

To be written and directed by Rian Johnson of Looper fame, the next proper episode in the series has a planned release date of May 26, 2017. Not much yet is known about the plot of this new sequel trilogy nor of how exactly del Toro would fit into its universe. If he does end up signing though, he’ll be joining the confirmed roster of adversaries which includes Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), and General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson).

Regardless of the size of the role, del Toro would make a fine addition to the cast of characters of this mega-franchise. He has proven through his extensive filmography that he can bring to the screen an intense presence, like that of his Oscar-winning role in Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic.

Lucasfilm and Johnson seem to be set into casting top talent for the role though as Variety also reports that they are also meeting Joaquin Phoenix for the part.
