Strap on them proton jackets: The trailer for the ‘Ghostbusters’ reboot is here!

It took us a while to get here, so here’s a quick backstory: Originally planned as a sequel to the ‘80s classic, Ghostbusters III was meant to feature a mixed cast of the old gang and the new, as a way of “passing the torch” to the next generation.

The original draft written by Dan Aykroyd and Tom Davis went through multiple revisions and rewrites in the space of twenty-seven years. The project wouldn’t get Sony’s green-light unless there was a new script, which the reboot has written from scratch. Principal photography began June 2015 (under the code name ‘Flapjack’) and director Paul Fieg has since had us salivating green slimes over teaser photos on Twitter:

Science is instrumental to the success of the first film. Feig recently said that he wanted to do a reboot rather than a sequel because, he  “didn’t like the idea of them being handed technology,” he says. “It was really important to us to make them scientists. I wanted to see it develop. I’m such a tech head. I’m completely geeking out over these proton packs in the front of the theater.”

On casting the four comediennes (Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones), Feig says: “Kristen is this kind of vulnerable comedian, Melissa is a headstrong comedian. Then you’ve got Kate who’s just the weirdo-nut, and Leslie is just a powerhouse that comes at you. The first movie worked because it had four of the funniest people in it. I just wanted the funniest people, and the funniest people I happen to know are these women. Ghostbusters is for everybody.”

Kristen, Kate and Leslie, all have roots from the Saturday Night Live show. Kristen and Melissa have starred together in Bridesmaids.

The film also stars Chris Hemsworth as Kevin, the Ghostbusters’ receptionist; Neil Casey as Rowan, the film’s primary antagonist. Confirmed to do cameo appearances are Ghostbusters alumnus Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Dan Aykroyd rumored to be a taxi cab driver who says the iconic, “I ain’t afraid of no ghosts.”

Ghostbusters is set for release in the U.S. on July 15, 2016. No date yet for the Philippine release but as always, we’ll keep you posted.
