Film adaptation of Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' is happening!Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series is going to be adapted into a film—and guess who are going to star? Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey as The Gunslinger and The Man In Black, respectively. Boy, what good mood are the movie gods in today?

Entertainment Weekly spoke with Steve and director Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) about the new film.

“The thing is, it’s been a looong trip from the books to the film,” King says, putting it right in context: “When you think about it, I started these stories as a senior in college, sitting in a little sh-tty cabin beside the river in Maine, and finally this thing is actually in pre-production now.” He laughs. “I’m delighted, and I’m a little bit surprised.”

King also makes the news official taking to his Twitter account:

The series—which spans eight novels, a slew of comic books and short stories, and sporadic references throughout King’s body of work—leaves Arcel and co-screenwriters Anders Thomas Jensen, Akiva Goldsman, and Jeff Pinkner plenty to work with. The question, however, is where in it does one start telling King’s epic saga?

King has an idea: “The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed,” which is a line from the original The Gunslinger novella (on which the whole series is based). “[The movie] starts in media res, in the middle of the story instead of at the beginning, which may upset some of the fans a little bit, but they’ll get behind it, because it is the story,” he says.

Arcel declined to specify which books his movie focus on, but he did offer this clue: “A lot of it takes place in our day, in the modern world.”
