Watch Ai Ai Delas Alas portray an aging prostitute in trailer for ‘Area’

I.C.Y.M.I.: The official trailer for Louie Ignacio’s new film Area just debuted online. The film, which stars Ai Ai Delas Alas, is set on a whorehouse in Pampanga dubbed an “area” in which aging prostitutes either wither away or limp to finally escape prostitution.

There’s not much I can say about the trailer, except that I’m excited for Delas Alas. As I see it, there are two points at which the scope of her charisma ends, from which my love for the woman stems: one, at her innate ability to exude hilarity using sheer romp (see: the very first frame we see her character in “Nanay“, possibly the most fun I’ve had in a Shake, Rattle & Roll episode); and two, her disquieting intensity as a serious actress.

Area is not Ai Ai Delas Alas’ first foray into indie filmmaking. She has starred in Nick Olanka’s 2014 film Ronda as a police officer who tries to look for her missing child.

I’m curious to see how Area will play out. It’s not like Asintado, a film which I tried but failed to appreciate, boosts much confidence in me. In fairness to Ignacio, though, if the trailer is any indication, it looks like we’re in the clear this time. The screenplay is written by Robby Tantingco (Ari: My Life With a King), so there’s that.

“In a city known for its red-light district patronized by foreigners, there’s a parallel place called “Area” where sex could be had for just a few pesos, sometimes for an old appliance, a can of sardines or even on credit. This film is about the last remaining prostitutes there and the Kapampangan family that operates the last known brothel.”

The film, which also stars Allen Dizon, Sue Prado, and Tabs Sumulong, Area is expected to hit theaters later this year. If rumors are true, we might see the film as part of the lineup at the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival.
