Our first Movie of the Week: ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’

With what does one define Wes Craven’s career? Under every circumstance, we’d be pointed to his 1984 slasher A Nightmare on Elm Street, an undervalued film that echoes an icon whose greater contributions to cinema remain unsung. If for some reason you wish to front with the fact that Craven catapulted Johnny Depp’s career, one that now slowly dwindles into him being this parodic muse, you have free reign. But we also mean to remember the film’s other contributions including but not limited to its timeless villain, Freddy Kreuger. I remember I have mentioned to someone wondering why Freddy remains a household name—often stapled to Craven’s—that if Michael Myers is remembered because he’s pure evil, Freddy is remembered because he’s sheer mania. (And in part because he didn’t tell us he was a retired member of Josh Trank’s mangled Fantastic Foursee above photo.)

To the uninitiated, we encourage you to see the film and re/watch it. A little background intel, though: A Nightmare on Elm Street follows a group of Midwestern teens who are traumatized by a certain Freddy Kreuger (Robert Englund), most famous for his stripe sweater, fresh fedora and hyper-sharp metal pedicures. If that doesn’t excite you—are you even human?!—then you should know that Johnny Depp plays a boy-next-door role (opposite Heather Langenkamp) and has some of the most glorious screen time a future A-list star can ask of an 80’s b-horror film. Sidenote: Kevin Bacon is having the feels.
