No Escape

The latest from John Erick Dowdle, the master behind the Quarantine franchise and last year’s hit As Above, So Below is back with the latest political action thriller, No Escape.

This movie stars Owen Wilson and Lake Bell (who are venturing into new ground as they are well-known doing comedies and light dramas) as Jack and Annie, a couple who flies to an unidentified Asian country with their kids for a new chapter in Jack’s career: his company is helping to improve the water system of this region. Pierce Brosnan co-stars as Hammond, a British ex-pat who also visits the same country for reasons not stated. Jack, Annie and their kids meet Hammond in the plane and in the airport when they touched down.

MOVIE REVIEW: No Escape (2015)

In the first few minutes, we see a family that is paranoid of moving into a foreign land- but who isn’t really? The kids, Beeze and Lucy are all fine as long as there is a pool but what happens in the movie is everything but fine. Hotel staff are friendly but locals seems unfriendly. Not even having settled in for 24 hours, a coup breaks out while Jack is out in the streets looking for a newspaper. This is where the magic, or shall we say the torture, of this movie begins.

Jack then goes back to the hotel to let his wife and kids know about the situation but he is then chased by the group of armed men who slaughtered all opposing force that’s tried to stop them. At this point we can tell that they are coming for the foreigners as they marched and forced themselves into the hotel where Jack and Annie’s family, and a hundred more ex-pats and tourists are staying. As Jack checks back in his family’s room he is flabbergasted that one of his girls, Lucy, went to the hotel pool- unaware of the siege. He then goes back to get her while his wife Annie witnesses gruesome violence through the door’s peephole when the attackers invade their floor. The majority of the movie relied on chase sequences and inventive escape tactics. Needless to say, we have seen movies with this dynamic but director John Erick Dowdle turns it up a notch, and effectively puts viewers on the edges of their seats as they watch a harrowing and terrifyingly real thriller right before their eyes. There was a scene that made us and we bet everyone else in the theater squirm in fear.

Pierce Brosnan and Owen Wilson star in THE COUP

Lake Bell delivers a great performance playing a woman in shock and fighting to protect her daughters. Not to mention Owen Wilson’s 180 degree-turn as a man willing to do anything to survive the revolution. Pierce Brosnan also amazes in his minor but compelling turn as the guy who rescues this family amidst the violence and later on reveals himself to Jack. Viewers saw that coming from a mile away.

The movie plays out as a usual action movie by the books but it’s the little things that will leave most viewers gasping for their breaths. A perfect example is seen when approaching the end of the movie, the family’s effort to cross the Vietnamese border is not granted by the authorities. As they pronounce that they’re seeking asylum, we see guns pointing at them any which way the camera went into. It built up more intensity as we still don’t know what happens next. The overall relentless energy and great pacing of the movie, despite its major flaws in character build-up, overshadows the cliche judgment that might get into viewer’s minds. No Escape is a must-see for everyone.
