Toronto Int’l Film Festival 2015 first round lineup announced

The 40th Toronto International Film Festival, which will run from September 10 to 20, 2015, has just unveiled around 50 titles of films in the Galas and Special Presentations out of 300 films that are usually screened in the festival.

Oscar-bait premieres include Jean-Marc Vallée’s ‘Demolition’ which is the opening film, Ridley Scott’s ‘The Martian’, Stephen Frears ‘The Program’ and Jay Roach’s ‘Trumbo’. What’s exciting in this revelation is that due to TIFF’s competition with fall events such as New York, Telluride and Venice film festivals, it somehow gives clues and clarity where high profile films will be potentially screened as ‘World Premieres’. Tom Hooper’s ‘The Danish Girl’ was classified under the North American premiere hinting that it might possibly open at the Venice Film Festival, which will start on the first week of September. Charlie Kaufman’s stop motion animation film ‘Anomalisa’ was categorised under Canadian premiere suggesting that a Telluride Film Festival premiere is extremely probable.

THE MARTIAN
More films are to be disclosed in the coming days but as far as the Oscar hopefuls are concerned, we pretty much have what TIFF can offer. Five more gala films (including the closing film) will give us surprise soon and I bet they haven’t reveal them yet because TIFF is still craving to have more ‘World Premieres’ and trying to steal the opportunity from Venice or Telluride. Half of the ‘Special Presentations’ lineup were already named and most of these were already screened at Cannes, Sundance or Berlin with few more second-tier ‘World Premieres’ such as Florian Gallenberger’s ‘Colonia’ and Michael Moore’s ‘Where to Invade Next’.

Listed below is the initial lineup of the festival:
