Unfriended movie teaser posterSkype-ing with friends will never be the same again after you see Levan Gabriadze’s Unfriended.

In this intense techno-horror film, six teens suffer the repercussions of their own misbehaviors. The entirety of the movie is shown through a computer monitor. It begins with a video of a girl named Laura Barns who shot herself in a school yard. We are then shown a footage dated a year ago where it is made clear why she has resorted to doing such a horrific act. The present time marks her death anniversary. The camera then cuts to a Skype video call between Blaire Lily (played by Shelley Henig) and Mitch (Moses Jacob Storm) who were getting frisky with each other. They are then interrupted by their friends, Jess (Renee Olstead), Kennington (Jacob Wysocki), Adam (Will Peltz) and Val (Courtney Halverson), turning things to a video conference call.

All of these characters appear only inside boxes and thumbnails that it might come across as claustrophobic to some. Gabriadze’s technical touches include patchy reception, familiar digital interfaces and applications and constant clicking and typing through a Mac screen.

As the character’s conversations unfold, an unknown caller appears on their Skype screen. Their first reactions were to delete this user but it later on proves to be impossible. As Blair becomes stressed out, she accuses Mitch of playing a prank on her. She then asks each of her friends if they are responsible for it. Everyone’s mood then shifts drastically as this unknown contact begins to type strange messages and threatens everyone in the group. They all suspect it to be Laura Barns. This “unknown caller” has been even able to make them play a game of “Never Have I Ever”, where they get to reveal their dirty little secrets. The audience gets a treat on how truly unlikeable and conniving these six teenagers are.

Any rational thinking person would just log off and go back to whatever they were doing before the call but these friends are glued to their seats because they know for a fact that they have their fair share of shaming and bullying Laura when she was alive. We also learn more on who did what in the footage and how much impact it brings to the whole story.

Break the rules of the game and they end up getting killed off. We see a good amount of gore as each teen meets their fate (you may want to re-think using a blender ever again). It’s cringe-inducing. We see it coming from a mile away but it’s difficult to say whether they rightfully deserve such consequences. In all fairness to them, they also come to terms with their bad actions right before their respective demise. All of this could have been avoided had Laura not been overly embarrassed and pushed to her limits.

Unfriended not only unravels a particular incident within the realm of their Skype call. On another hand, it tells something about the backward progress of our society–one that has almost everything in terms of accessing information. This all-access pass to what technology can offer is the underlying point that Unfriended wants to delve into other than merely scaring the hell out of its audiences. The wise and the old usually tell us to get off the internet, and as we do not ever listen to them, the terror in this film might finally make us obey.

On a larger scale, Unfriended may have been advertised as a horror film (with the original title “Cybernatural”) but it is really a social commentary that imparts a very important message about the effects of bullying and how the things we say or do impact the people around us. In this case, the online community is a crucial place to lurk in with this kind of setup.

As an innovative yet weak genre-bending horror film, Unfriended is still able to utilize its limited setting to unravel its creepy tales from within. Should this flick eventually becomes a successful item in the box office, this could pretty much be a game-changer in the horror genre.

  1. I have pulled away from the expectation that a feature-length horror film set on a desktop screen will at all be sufficient for discerning viewers. I have yet to see this, so I can’t exactly judge it right now. But I guess, picking up from the short film Noah, the acclaimed quickie that is beloved by both critics and fanatics because it accurately depicts a generation and the air of ironic disconnect that permeates it, it will eventually come to this. I’m all for daring new pictures, so I’m still going to catch it sometime soon.

In the meantime, Carlos, I’d like to welcome you to the site. And what a very nice review!

  2. Thank you Armando! And please do see this, it’s something never done before (saying that within the scope of my cinematic experiences) but the tension in the movie is present the whole entirety of it. It was frustrating but I’m sure you’ll have a blast.
