As if Jessica Lange singing a Lana Del Ray song is not enough reason to prowl at this season’s pilot of American Horror Story, creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck are spilling details non-stop that make binge-watching an even more impossible task. I have told friends the close possibility of it taking over a quarter of my life, and it just might indeed, episode after another; the show features a community of curious oddities and a killer clown, I mean, need I carry on?
Titled Freak Show, the season is set in Jupiter of 50’s Florida and centers on Elsa Mars (Lange), a German expat who gathers a band of misfits in order to continue doing shows. I will argue that besides Mars’ narcissistic desires, the show’s crises will be mostly economical. The Bearded Lady, portrayed by Kathy Bates, for example is a former circus performer who needs to provide for her lobstered-hand son Jimmy Darling (Evan Peters). The freak-show business is fading fast, and Mars has found the perfect resolution in twin-headed Bette and Dot (played by Sarah Paulson), who seems to be their final flare in rekindling audience interest.
