Oscar Isaac and Alex Garland reunite for Jeff Vandermeer adaptation ‘Annihilation’

Alex Garland’s Shelley-esque science fiction-thriller Ex Machina is one of the best to come out last year and surely is deserving of its acclaim and commercial success. In Garland’s second film, he’s re-enlisting Oscar Isaac, the actor who in their previous teaming-up played the philanthropist tycoon, Nathan Bateman, to join the already confirmed cast of Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, and Tessa Thompson.

The new film is titled Annihilation, a film which Garland writes based on the science fiction-thriller trilogy by author Jeff Vandermeer. The story centers around “a biologist (Portman) who, in seeking answers to her husband’s tragic disappearance volunteers for a government expedition into an area sealed off as an environmental disaster zone. What she discovers, however, is pristine wilderness, and a mysterious dark force within it.” No word as yet regarding Isaac’s role.

This is good news. At least for me, as Vandermeer’s novel sits atop my reading queue. This is one reason to actually get on reading the series, of which I’m hearing great things about. I know. Lazy.

Annihilation the book, as mentioned, is a part of a trilogy (the ‘Southern Reach’ trilogy), though there’s no word yet if Annihilation the film is a planned trilogy. As per tradition, this is likely a matter dictated by the film’s performance when it opens in theaters. Speaking of which: a play date in the latter part of 2016 seems most likely as the film begins shooting later this spring in London.

We’ll keep you looped in.
