Kuya Wes, Neomanila, and Ulan opens today

Whooops. Looks like ‘Captain Marvel’ isn’t going to conquer the rest of the screens this March, as three Filipino films will (hopefully) be dominating Metro Manila cinemas today, March 13!

The same goes for ABS-CBN’s REELive the Classics as it opens with Dolphy’s Captain Barbel and Fox Searchlight/20th Century Fox’s The Aftermath starring Kiera Knightley, Jason Clarke, and Alexander Skarsgard.

Here’s something to look forward to this week for your weekly cinema viewing:

Kuya Wes

What to look out for: That ‘breaking the fourth wall scene’

James Mayo’s Cinemalaya hit braces the screen to commercial release. Starring Ogie Alcasid and Ina Raymundo, ‘Kuya Wes’ is a man working for a remittance office finds his “destiny” in one of his frequent customers. The film earned nominations here and abroad, including a Best Actress win for Ms. Raymundo at the recent Fantasporto International Film Festival. This goes without saying that this is by far one of Ogie Alcasid’s best performances.

Neomanila

Biktima…

Suspek…

Pare-pareho…”

Mikhail Red’s Neomanila finally graces commercial release after nearly two years. Co-written with Rae Red and Zig Dulay, the film tackles war on drugs through an unlikely heroine played by Eula Valdez, who trains an orphan to become a professional assassin — much like herself. Prepare to be served with intense action and impeccable visuals in this neo-noir thriller.  If you aren’t afraid of spoilers, read our review here.

Ulan

We’ll get back to you: On what those ‘Tikbalangs’ are for.

I know, I know, I’m not exactly sure how to position the synopsis of this film. From the looks of it’s trailer, and from Miss Nadine Lustre herself, Ulan is a film about a superstitious woman who’s life is affected by belief and — maybe — the belief that she can never find love… especially when it rains. 😛 Irene Villamor is becoming one of those exciting filmmaker-screenwriters to look out for each year so here’s hoping this one lives up to its hype.

The Aftermath

What’s in it for me?: Kiera Knightley is in a love triangle between Jason Clarke and Alexander Skarsgard. Hmmm.

Set in post-war Germany, Rachel (Knightley) comes home to her husband’s new settlement. In the hopes of reuniting with her husband (Clarke) after a tragic accident befalls between them, she finds that they are not alone in their home. She realizes that it’s previous owners, Stephan Lubert (Skarsgard) and his daughter, are german (and possibly former Nazi sympathizers), she struggles between keeping her relationship with her husband afloat, and leaving past memories behind. This film opens to select Megaworld Lifestyle Cinemas near you.

Captain Barbell: The Restored Version

Who is Captain Barbell?: as the first ‘CB’, Dolphy shows us that that superheroes are truly comically funny.

Jose ‘Pepe’ Wenceslao’s 1973 classic gets the restored treatment courtesy of ABS-CBN Film Restoration project. The film gets its big-screen launch the whole month of March in Santolan Town Plaza, Cinema 3.

The Con is On

What is Uma Thurman doing here?: This 2018 heist film stars her, alongside Sofia Vergara, Tim Roth, and Maggie Q. (Stephen Fry is also here)

Brief synopsis: two badly behaved con artist escape to Los Angeles and plot a heist to uncover some jewels — in an effort to pay off a huge debt.

On the Basis of Sex

Who is that beautiful woman in the photo: If you still don’t know who Felicity Jones is, then just continue reading.

On the Basis of Sex stars Felicity Jones, the woman who starred opposite actors in movies like Inferno, The Theory of Everything,  and Like Crazy. In this film, she gets a starring role as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who is just the second woman to be appointed to the US Supreme Court. Based on reviews, her performance here deserves to be seen. Check this out on local cinemas nationwide.
