Hide Your Smiling Faces

Hide Your Smiling FacesA haunting, beautiful shot opens Hide Your Smiling Faces — a film about mortality and its ripples. The shot, fixed closely at a snake whose fangs puncture its immobile prey, is held with much awe and dread and all curiosity that remain. The reptile slinks ever-so slowly, so listless, so terrestrial; submitting the idea that the prey’s demise feels only one with nature, and it should. It is how the system works. But then in contrast, the tragic death of a child (Ivan Tomic) sets everyone into their individual courses of loss and (eventual) coping.

Hit with the greatest of impact are brothers Eric (Nathan Varnson) and Tommy (Ryan Jones), whose inability at self-expression put added gravity to the loss.

The death in itself is a mystery, yet Daniel Patrick Carbone does not seem to invest himself in unraveling it; he instead explores the effects that resonate with his characters, however minute they appear. Carbone makes use of terrific sights and sound; the film recalls — quite explicitly — in lesser echoes of Terrence Malick and David Gordon Green.

A quiet rumination at loss, Hide Your Smiling Faces is heavier in mood than it is in narrative: In many instances we fear that Eric’s violent tendencies will lead to something dreadful.  There is a distinct sense of dreariness and tenderness; of rottenness and ripeness. Events unfold at their natural pace which gives enough breathing room for Carbone’s rather indulgent poetics and lyricism. The whole lot of eighty short minutes feels enough to know completely both Eric and Tommy.

Seen through eyes that estrange adults — a consistent source of disappointment and disconnect — the brothers decide to enter the woods for all its treachery known or otherwise. Eric, who inspires fraught with his violent tendencies encounters a large brown bear whom he nervously pets; and Tommy, who makes the woods as a personal recluse, beckons the rain as it falls down on him.

In this terrific closing parallel, the brothers, in each of their ways, have met their endmost ripple: like predator and prey, they are one with nature.
